Corporate NGO Partnerships In Developing Countries Essay

Corporate NGO Partnerships In Developing Countries - Essay Example This number in India checks considerably more which is around 1-2 million and in Russia it is around 277000 (NGO, n.d.). With expanding globalization prompting cross fringe exchange exercises and with an ever increasing number of associations from one country wandering in another nation Corporate Social Responsibility has gotten significant for each association to support in since a long time ago run. Rebuilding of the general public with endeavors being made for the government assistance of the state has prompted enormous development of NGO s in Western nations. Another explanation which has improved the quickness of the development in NGOs is that the distinctive worldwide bodies as of late including the World exchange Organization were chiefly centered around the enhancement of the industrialist society. So it has gotten completely basic for the development of associations which center around human causes and formative issues identifying with the general society everywhere with es sential spotlight on compassionate exercises. One select model concentrating on helpful movement is â€Å"World Social Forum† which legitimately restricts the â€Å"World Economic Forum† and principally controls government assistance of poor people and in one sense it is viewed as a privileged method of legislative issues. The paper examines whether corporate-NGO organizations have helped in advancing manageability in creating countries. History and Growth of NGO Rugendyke (2007), Clark (2003), Teegen (2003) see that there was gigantic suport for the development worried about the development of NGO battle in the Western World before. Every single huge character, understudies, model or individuals from some other calling had a lot of help for a well known battle named as â€Å"Make Poverty History†. There had been a lot of exposure in regards to the reason. According to the creator as of late when... This report focuses on that all associations are intended for making something; for accomplishing some reason. In a business association the makers stay under direct manager’s control. In an association the purchaser gets possession for the installment being made and along these lines the connection among association and customer closes. In any case, the maker is altogether not quite the same as the customer. This report makes an end that along these lines from the above conversation on the corporate-NGO organization it very well may be said that the NGOs ought to be given enough space to work. This is on the grounds that the NGOs have their imaginative work culture which is at change with the customary working techniques. This causes the NGOs to create strategies according to the requirements of the general public and according to the issue everywhere harassing a specific fragment. The NGOs try sincerely and grow new strategies implied for the government assistance of the gen eral public. So it is exceptionally significant that the NGOs turn out to be more arrangements, go for tie ups with corporate and in this manner utilizing their skill just as producing the assets required for the tasks to be effective. Additionally they ought to keep away from the expressions of the pundit and work on their own arrangement of measures and rules gave these principles are not against the general public. This will help create NGO exercises over the long haul and will help increment the quantity of NGO associations over the globe which will realize change particularly in the less creating countries.

Why U.S Was Obligated To Drop Bombs - Free Essay Example

I believe the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945 during World War II, through the city of Hiroshima and the city of Nagasaki was a good decision and saved more Americans in the long run. Waiting for the Japanese to surrender and put an end to the war themselves, which would have been highly unlikely, would have put many U.S. lives in danger. The end of the war slowed the spread of the Japanese controlled the shortage of supplies in 1945, avoiding around one to two million deaths. The Japanese gave no signs that they were ready to give up and stop fighting, so Truman was forced to authorized the bomb, because it appeared to offer the most effective way to produce an American victory on American terms with the lowest cost in American lives, which was the ultimate goal.    By the summer of 1945, hundreds and even thousands of American, Australian and British soldiers were prisoners of the war for more than three years. These brave soldiers were being used as slaves at work camps throughout Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. President Truman knew that while they were trained to survive most were near death from malnutrition and harsh overwork in bad conditions. When the United States had freed some of the prisoners in 1944, the circumstances   they found were unbelievable and absolutely unnecessarily cruel, many had past way, and Truman knew that other prisoners must be freed soon or none of them would survive causing more American soldiers and their allies soldiers deaths. Without the atomic bomb, the United States would have to invade and attack the home islands of Japan, which would be very hard and cause many deaths. Casualty estimates predicted hundreds and thousands to more than one million Americans would be wounded, killed, or missing in t he action. Harry Truman decided that he must use the atomic bomb to end the war as quickly as possible, and while he hated to do this to innocint citizens in the long run, he would save American lives as well as other countries fighting alongside of The United States of America.    Truman also knew that Japan had a code called the way of the warrior that was very respected as a Japanese soldier. Each and every soldier knew the requirements of the code, which were to   never be captured, never break down, and never surrender. Surrender was dishonorable to their country. Each soldier was taught to fight till death, and was expected to die before suffering dishonor to their country. When Truman discovered this, he was smart enough to know that Japan was not   going to give up at all, and it would take something extraordinary, like an atomic bomb to end this war. He knew an invasion would end the war quicker than an other alternatives so he had to make a tough decision.   Ã‚   By August, 1945, the ?defeated Japanese Empire was costing the United States nine hundred   casualties a day. We had firebombed over sixty cities and destroyed most of their factories, yet they were still fighting back insanely hard with no intentions to stop or even slow down. So while some might say the use of atomic bombs was unnecessary or too aggressive, it was a hard decision that needed to be made. As a President Trumans job was to do what was best for his country, and having nine hundred casualties a day was not in the best interest for the country, so he had to do something to stop it, and quick.   Truman decided that the best decision for America was to drop the bombs. The Little Boy exploded with about thirteen kilotons of force, leveling five square miles of the city and killing eighty thousand people instantly. Tens of thousands more victims later died of radiation exposure. When the Japanese did not immediately surrender, the United States was worried so we dropped a second atomic bomb three days later on the city of Nagasaki. The Fat Man killed an estimated forty thousand people on impact. The purpose of the second bomb was to show the Japanese that we had power, and to lead them to think that we had more power than we did. This lead then to surrender and the war to officially end.    As you can imagine the devastation of sixty million dead and fifty million forced to leave their homes and city. People lost friends and loved ones, and didnt really know how to move on with life. Many people tried to go on without food, water, and jobs and thousands more died from famine and disease. United States gave Japan two billion dollars to restart their economy and the Japanese Emperor became a figurehead.   The victorious allies put Japan under international control. U.S. General Douglas MacArthur was supreme commander for the reconstruction of Japan. Goals for reconstruction were democratic self-government, economic stability, and peaceful Japanese co-existence with the community of nations. The United States is still obligated to protect Japan to this day. Overall I believe the United States was obligated to drop the two atomic bombs. While we did cause heartache and economical issues we were protecting American lives which is ultimately our main goal. We also helped rebuild the economy and are still helping other countries thrive today. The atomic bombs were not meant to be personal attacks but strictly business, which is why we chose to drop them.

Global Economic And Financial Crisis Essay - 840 Words

The acceleration of overall economic growth over the past decade (until the onset of the global economic and financial crisis) has been accompanied by a significant acceleration in the growth of credit in the economy. This broad trend suggests that high economic growth has been accompanied by financial deepening. However, despite such expansion of the financial sector, increasing concern has been expressed on financial inclusion in recent years (Mohan, 2012)1. One of the key feature of financial deepening is that it accelerates economic growth through the expansion of access to those who do not have adequate finance themselves (ibid. 2012)2; and among all those who do not have finance, the farming community in the agricultural sector has been the most prominent one in all the developing countries in general and India in particular. Agriculture is an indispensable reality for promoting livelihood for the majority of the population in developing countries and the fact is that agricultural growth is a fundamental pre-requisite for widespread poverty reduction in developing countries. It plays a crucial and a multidimensional role in the development process. Is Nursing A Profession - 1153 Words

Is Nursing A Profession? Prentella Wilkerson University of Alabama at Birmingham Is Nursing a Profession? A pronounced dispute still stands of whether a job of a nurse can be considered a profession or an occupation. Merriam-Webster s Medical Dictionary defines an occupation as â€Å"a practice preformed with financial compensation† (Occupation, 2013). Importance of Financial Reporting

Question: Describe about the Importance of Financial Reporting? Answer: I expected the course on financial reporting to be a challenging one considering the reviews from seniors particularly because I had limited exposure to a background in the subject. However, considering the importance of financial reporting as an academic discipline and the crucial role it could play in my career, I decided to approach this subject with a lot of interest. An initial couple of lectures were fine in their content, and I would fairly understand the proceedings in the lecture. I also went through the additional learning materials provided to supplement the understanding and this approach was immensely helpful in the first couple of weeks. However, the topic on lease accounting was particularly difficult even though in the lecture it seemed like a topic that is not that difficult as the classification between operational and finance lease were driven by certain core principles. But, the practical application of these concepts was particularly problematic which was compoun ded with the addition of the relevant entries in the books of account of lessor and lessee. I really got panicked and referred to all the relevant material available on the online portal. Despite going through the tutorials, I faced a plethora of doubts and had to take help from my fellow students who were more comfortable with the subject. This helped me immensely to develop an understanding of the lease accounting and also made it evident that the only way to excel in the course is to enhance the fundamental understanding of the concepts rather than mugging up as it is not advisable since the essence does not lie in knowing the relevant accounting standards but in their application in real time. As a result, to enhance my understanding of subject, I started going through the content to be taught in the next lecture beforehand. This was immensely helpful especially with regards to complex topics particularly regarding business combinations where most of my classmates faced severe problems. However, I was able to manage that without much issue. Additionally, group study was also immensely helpful in clarification of the concepts since various doubts were raised that e nhanced the overall clarity of the topic. However, one issue that was faced was with regards to the practical examples and application based problems that were limited. Ideally, for complex topics such as lease, business combinations more time should have been devoted to precise application especially considering my kinaesthetic learning style whereby I tend to focus more on case study methodology. I aim to extend the learning during the course to my future professional endeavours by focusing more on concept clarity as it provides a solid foundation on which additional knowledge could be gained with relative ease. Without concept clarity, additional efforts are largely unproductive. Hence, during my professional career, I intend to emphasise on various training for conceptual clarity along with peer to peer learning on the job. Further, it may be recommended that more focus in the course should be given to the application of accounting norms using case study pedagogy along with more doubt clearing sessions to enable the weaker students to cope up in a better manner.

The Correlation Between Chinese History And Beliefs Essays

The Correlation Between Chinese History And Beliefs The Correlation Between Chinese History And Beliefs The numerous cultures of Mainland China are both intricate with their systems of deities and traditions, and yet humble with their ways of life and survival. China is located in the midst of high lands, plateaus, canyons and numerous river systems. In coinciding with the difficult landscapes in which they live, the Chinese people have managed to generally abide by the natural protocols of the land. Throughout their approximately five thousand years of civilization the Chinese have concocted many traditions which are based upon their thriving in their environment. These traditions are what produce the intricate social structures of most of China. Every aspect of the Chinese culture is interrelated and therefore necessary for the continuance of the civilization. These qualities are what have confirmed China as not only a grand civilization but also one of great integrity. The area in which China is contained is within the continent of Asia surrounded by the countries of Mongolia, Myanmar, India, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, and both North and South Korea. With these various surrounding civilizations China has been susceptible to multiple altercations with encroaching empires and inflictions from outside cultures. Most disputes were over jealousy fueled by the captivating land in which China is located. However, the Chinese people, in accordance with their cultural beliefs, felt it dishonorable to claim ownership of any parcel of land. The Chinese people carry much pride for their vast existence as a mainly undivided civilization. However, their earliest of history was not thoroughly documented until the Qin dynasty (approximately 200 B.C.E.) Before that specific era Chinese history was preserved through stories by mouth rather than by quill. Though it is impossible to be assured of the validity of any oral tradition the Chinese people still regard them as written history. Many of the beliefs in current Chinese culture still heavily rely on the precepts of these stories as their basis. The unwritten history of China began nearly five thousand years ago with two rulers of primordial Asia. The first of the rulers was known as Huang Di, also referred to as the Yellow Emperor, and ruled part of the Yellow River Valley of central Asia. The second of rulers was known as Yan Di, often referred to as the Fiery Emperor, to whom an unknown area of outer Asia had belonged. The importance of these two rulers is said to be in cause of their extensive attributes to early civilization in China. The invention of the cart, the boat, clothes, script and medicine is attributed to the genius of Huang Di. Whereas the necessity of cultivating the land through the use of a plow is attributed to Yan Di. `Perhaps, hundreds of years thereafter the attributions of Huang Di and Yan Di, the leaders known as Yao, Shun and Yu had led the people one after another. Yu was a prestigious and popular leader who supposedly gained the respect of his followers by taming two flooding rivers by redirecting their currents towards the sea. Upon the death of Yu his son, Qi. had succeeded as ruler. With this first exchange in rule the first dynasty in Chinese history had been founded. It was called the Xia dynasty. With the establishment of its first dynasty China had been transformed from a primitive society, consisting of no family structure, private property, or class distinction, to a society based mainly on family and private ownership. Little is known about the Xia dynasty except for that it had lasted four hundred years and was ultimately overthrown by the Shang,a state that was east of the Chinese establishment. All history before the Shang dynasty is largely legendary with very little or no material evidence of neither the Xia dynasty nor the rulers Yu, Huang Di or Yao Di. However, the Shang dynasty is assured to have existed in some manner as it is proven by numerous burial chambers and oracle bones unearthed one-hundred years ago in Anyang County, Henan Province. Anyang is believed to be one of the various capitals during the Shang Dynasty. The nearly one hundred thousand bones with nearly three thousand different ideograms on them concluded this assessment.

Essay on Eth 125 Final

Essay on Eth 125 Final Essay on Eth 125 Final Jessica Nosbish ETH 125 Jennifer Friedrich September 6, 2013 Diversity in the United States Diversity in the United States gives us a better understanding as to what everyone goes through. Not only are people treated differently, but everyone is not treated based on their knowledge or personality, people are almost categorized and put in groups to better be described by others. Every individual is different, but everyone should be treated with respect. The United States sets a great example on what people should be treated like. Events in history like slavery, women’s rights, or equal rights are all apart of movements that are set in history to improve equal treatment. These are events that have made paths in time to let us all where we are today. There is still more things to do to improve these problems with diversity, and still more to be taught to everyone. Living in a world now that involves different diversities helps me understand who everyone is and who I am. Finding that everyone comes from a different background and everyone deserves more than just being i gnored. Today there is more than just being pushed aside or looked at with grief or pity. People should be treated equally, but is everyone really treated equal, of course not, a person cannot change their understanding or thought process even though it is wrong. The truth that I can’t wrap my head around is that most people or not all are treated with some sort of discrimination. The whole concept of a person being treated as well as you treat yourself is never going to happen, not even with your significant other. Difference should not be bad; a person can be different but be accepted into society as an equal partner or person. Whenever I come across a person who is not being treated equal or given a chance of opportunity it is sad, but if just one person can come to acceptance of everyone and understand that a person is a person. The area where I grew up was mostly in the suburbs. I grew up mostly with Caucasian families. Not only was there no other families that were Afr ican American, Hispanic, or Asian, but I grew up only thinking that this was the only race even when I moved into a smaller town. Not only was there one Hispanic in my whole high school, but there was no other races. I was not aware that there are different ethnicities, so naive and young I couldn’t comprehend people that didn’t have the same skin tone. I read in books and never met another that was not Caucasian. Not only was I unaware, my parents never spoke of different races. As soon as I got a job things changed, I worked with a lot of people and met different cultures, I worked at a grocery store in the cities and found that people are different and are raised differently. Not only was I not taught of different cultures, but I was scared to approach someone that looked different. This was all new to me, being sixteen and not understanding anything about the real world. Being so dumb and young doesn’t help unless my mind is willing to learn. I was so intrig ued by everyone else and wanted to know everything. I wanted to believe that everyone was equal, but I soon found out that people reflect differently on what race a person is or how much money they had. Cliques were formed and soon I wasn’t really a part of any group. Usually races stuck with each other as well as people that were in the same income class. My parents were Caucasian and didn’t have a lot of money so I feel into becoming a loner. Not only was each group diverse, but they all stuck together, no one went outside their groups even though we all worked at the same place. Now I look back at everything I was taught and what I learned on my own, I find that most people judge everyone just based on categories. Finding that everyone is judged right when they walk through the door is remarkable. I think of the same comparison as when a person is sentenced in prison. Not only when a person walks through the door,

Racial Problems Critique Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Racial Problems Critique - Essay Example Different groups of people, from different races all over the world, have found their way into America in different ways. Shortly after its discovery, many Europeans, faced with the need to find a better life elsewhere after the famous European revolutions, migrated to America. They claimed large amounts of land, embarked on large scale farming and helped fuel the agrarian revolution that led to another revolution called industrial revolutions. In subsequent years, when the need for human labor to labor the large American plantation emerged, Africans were brought to America to fulfill this need. Later years saw the bringing of Chinese, Indians, Spanish and other groups into America. Later immigrations have been fueled by opportunities for better life assumed to be in America. It is thus the country with the highest numbers of racial groups in the world but for a long time in the history of America, there have been problems with harmonious racial coexistences. Resultant problems have not only been witnessed at personal levels but also in status quo and political levels. Until recently, after election of president Obama, there were widespread notions that black Americans were very lowly regarded in the American society, however this is not exactly the case. Over the years, racial segregation has reduced in the American setting, and it has no profound effect in the American setting and political environment. This is because, America being a strong democracy, issues to do with race continue to be wiped out every year, and with time, this will be a thing of the past.In order to understand whether racial segregation is a great problem, it is important to understand the historical background of racism in the early 20th century. Racial problems in the twentieth century Issues of racial discrimination at personal level From his letter from Birmingham jail, Luther claims that there are numerous injustices committed on the black community by white moderate who instill on following order and not justice. He claims that there are various instances where black community has undergone oppressive behavior from the white majority. His justification of engaging in creation of tension as direct engagement of provocation of dialogue is aimed at highlighting the need for immediate engagement of it, hence a mirror of the amount of racial problems in America at personal levels. In support of the same, Belgrave and Allison (15) argue that after taking psychological test differences between blacks and whites, insurgences on injustices went higher. Their report claims that there was proposition of developing a less abstract type of education for blacks since they were considered mentally weak. But criticism for the tests indicated that such injustices included formulation of test questions only relevant and familiar to whites, hence favoring the whites over blacks. Secondly, the text continues to indicate that racial problems were greatly profound in America durin g the 20th century at personal levels. Employment law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Employment law - Essay Example Under this act, employers are only allowed to hire persons who are permitted legally to work in the United States of America. They include citizens of the country and legally permitted aliens. An employer can suffer civil penalties if found hiring or continuing to employ an unauthorized alien. They will be required to stop the unlawful behavior and pay a fine. They can be fined in a range of between $250 and $2000 per unauthorized foreign worker depending on the extent that they breach the act. Employers who fail to prepare and present Forms I-9 as required by the act will be liable for civil penalties that range between $100 and $1000.Extent of violation and size of the business are factors that will be considered in deciding the penalty ( Holland and Burnett, 2007). Employers can also suffer criminal penalties from violating the act. Such penalties include a fine of up to $3000 and/or imprisonment of up to 5 years. In my opinion these consequences are enforced by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and failure to comply with them will lead to legal enforcement. Such consequences would tarnish the public image for the restaurant. Reforms and procedures that should be followed to comply with the act include; employment of aliens to be in accordance with the US Immigration Act, completing form I-9 to verify employment eligibility, and procedures for paying international employees

Written Assignment Essay Example for Free

Written Assignment Essay Answer all of the following questions. Title your assignment Written Assignment 4, unless your mentor directs otherwise. This assignment covers text chapters 18 through 23. 1. Explain the relationship among savings, investment, and net capital outflow. Savings are equal to domestic investment + net capital outflow. In an open economy, both net capital outflow ( which is the purchase of foreign assets by domestic investors minus the purchase of domestic investments by foreigners) and savings and domestic investments are both ways of saving, and are both used to get the full picture of total saving. 2. Describe the economic logic behind the theory of purchasing-power parity (PPP). What factors might prevent PPP from holding true? The purchasing power parity tells us the a unit of any given currency should be able to buy the same quantity of goods in all countries. This principle is based on the fact that prices should remain constant for goods no matter where the goods are purchased, otherwise there is an opportunity for profit that was left un-exploited. The theory has 2 holes in it. Firstly, some goods are not easily traded, and secondly, some goods cannot easily be substituted for another. 3. Describe supply and demand in the market for loanable funds and the market for foreign currency exchange. How are these markets linked? Supply and demand of loanable funds is determined by the real interest rate. A higher interest rate causes people to save and raises supply where a lower real interest rate does the opposite. In the market for foreign currency exchange, the real exchange rate balances out supply and demand. A higher U.S. real exchange rate increases U.S. goods compared to foreign goods, and exports fall. These 2 markets are linked because between the 2 of them, they determine national saving, domestic investment, net capital exports and net exports. 4. What is capital flight? When a country experiences capital flight, what is the effect on the countrys interest rate and exchange rate? Capital flight is a large and sudden reduction in the demand for assets located in a country. The currency of the country depreciates in value and the interest rate rises. 5. List and explain the three theories for why the short-run aggregate-supply curve is upward sloping. Sticky wages. Wages are slow to adjust and may not be able to be changed. Steady wages can be harmful to a company and cause them to have lower production levels. Nominal wages are based on expected prices and are slow to respond when the actual prices ends up being different. Sticky price. Prices for some goods and services also are â€Å"sticky† and take time to adjust. This is due in part to â€Å"menu costs†, or the administrative costs incurred by changing the prices of a product in a firm. Misperceptions. Different businesses read the market different ways. A misperception in the trend of the market can cause suppliers to supply more product, even when the demand is not truly there. 6. What might shift the aggregate-demand curve to the left? Use the model of aggregate demand and aggregate supply to trace through the short-run and long-run effects of such a shift on output and the price level. Use the following diagram to help explain your answer. Point A is the short-run equilibrium point whereas Point C is the long run equilibrium point. Higher prices lower costs and shift demand to the left (lower). If for say, the current market price of this item is at Point C, and the market price drops, the demand for the item will rise, shifting the curve to the left. 7. Suppose the Fed expands the money supply, but because the public expects this Fed action, it simultaneously raises its expectation of the price level. What will happen to output and the price level in the short run? Compare this result to the outcome if the Fed expanded the money supply but the public didn’t change its expectation of the price level? Use the diagram below to explain your answer. The output should remain constant if the FED had raised its expectation of the price level over time, but immediately, the raise is price would cause in increase in production. The equilibrium point should shift from point a, to point c temporarily, then up to point out as it balances out. If the FED did not change it’s expectations in the price levels, than the equilibrium should move to pint c from pint a, and stay there. 8. What is the theory of liquidity preference? How does it help explain the downward slope of the aggregate-demand curve? This is the theory that the interest rate adjust to bring the money supply and demand into equilibrium. A higher price level increases the demand for money, as people will carry more to pay the higher prices. Higher prices in turn causes a higher interest rate. The higher interest rate reduces goods demanded, and supply will also shift downward. 9. Suppose that survey measures of consumer confidence indicate a wave of pessimism is sweeping the country. If policymakers do nothing, what will happen to aggregate demand? Explain what the Fed should do if it wants to stabilize aggregate demand. If the Fed does nothing, explain what Congress might do to stabilize aggregate demand. If policy makers do nothing, demand will fall, so will production and employment. Eventually, recession and possible depression afterwards. The Fed can do things such as lowering the interest rate to help stimulate the economy. Congress may decide to cut taxes in an attempt to simulate the economy, but they can also increase government spending to stabilize the economy. 10. What is natural about the natural rate of unemployment? Explain why the natural rate of unemployment might differ across countries. The natural means that it is beyond the influence of monetary policy. Different countries have different abilities, laws and demand for employment. For instance, the country may not be able to organize in the same fashion as a union shop here is the US. might. 11. What causes the lags in the effect of monetary and fiscal policy on aggregate demand? What are the implications of these lags for the debate over active versus passive policy? Aggregate demand has lags in policy due to the time it takes for the policy to take affect. Additionally, the spending plans are set in advance so it also takes time for changes to affect spending. The biggest issue is the ability to time the policy correctly, since it takes time for everything to adjust. 12. Some economists say that the government can continue running a budget deficit forever. How is that possible? Since population and technological progress grow over time, so do a nation’s ability to repay the interest on it’s debt. As long as the debt grows slower than the nation’s income, this is possible. Reference: Mankiw, N. G. (2008). Principles of Macroeconomics. Fifth Edition. Ohio: South-Western Cengage Learning.

Christopher Columbus Should Not be Considered a Hero :: Christopher Columbus Essays

Christopher Columbus was a man who much credit was given to for a very small deed. In fact he discovered a new world, but that world was only new to him and the men of his previous generations. What about the many Native Americans whose fathers and father’s fathers shed their blood for the land in which they had lived for so many years. How could one such as Christopher Columbus who was looking for freedom and hope cause so much bondage and destruction? One man’s victory turned out to be devastation for millions. When you think of historical greats like Mother Theresa and Martin Luther King Jr. Columbus is not a name that I would use in association with theirs. Now on the other hand I see similarities between Columbus and Hitler. When we remember Hitlerwe look back on all the devastation that he caused and have nothing but empathy and admiration for the Jews and their endurance. Why not the same for the Indians of these great lands, whose tears and blood where shed for nothing more than mere greed. Christopher Columbus can in no way, shape, or form should be considered a hero. A hero is someone who performs good deeds for the sake of others and not for their own benefit. Christopher Columbus did not do a single good deed in any of his four voyages in the late 1400's. 1492, proved to be a good year for Spain and Columbus , but it would become known as the year of hell for the Indians who occupied the land. Columbus and his crew basically enslaved a whole race of men, women, and children. The Natives were plagued by disease and forced into labor for the sole benefit of finding gold. How can one who is suppose to stand for such democracy assume the position of such a horrible dictator? We as Americans should look at the facts before we celebrate this so-called founder. For far too long we have praised and celebrated a tyrant instead of giving glory to the Native Americans whose land this rightfully is, we read in history books how victorious he was but as the story goes on it reveals a history of rape, murder and deception.

Great response from Arthur Miller Essay

The Crucible was written in 1953, by Arthur Miller. Miller has said that the purpose of the play is to comment on the parallels between the unfair Salem Witch trials and the ‘Red Scare’ that lasted eight years 1948-1956. A Crucible is a large container that is used in the production of steel, where they are heated until they melt. A Crucible can stand extremely high temperatures. This is a direct comment on what the play is about. Arthur Miller provided an artistic response to the political climate and he wrote to tackle certain issues such as intimidation. Under McCarthyism, the United States was afraid of communisms influence. McCarthyism came from Senator John McCarthy, who set out to find any threats to the American life and their security. Anybody suspected of communism, mainly those in the entertainment industry, either confessed and gave names of other people or the American Government blacklisted them. Miller, in the entertainment industry, who was protecting his business and friends from any negative outlook it gave, refused to testify to the Committee and was blacklisted. McCarthyism has a great likeness to the play ‘The Crucible’. In both situations people only wishing to save themselves falsely accuse many people who suffer. John and Elizabeth Proctor don’t have a normal husband and wife relationship, although they are married. They are distant with one another. Their relationship is full of suspicions and clearly has a lack of trust: â€Å"What keeps you so late?† is an accusation. Elizabeth really means what have you been doing or where have you been to keep you so late. The strength of their relationship is tested. John tries to please Elizabeth but she cannot forget her suspicions. John explains to her: † I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you, and still an everlasting funeral marches around you heart.† This shows that John feels guilt. John Proctor is an honest man. We see this through the way he acts and what he says. John works hard to provide for his family. He has a good clean name in the village and is well respected. However, when the hysteria begins, he wonders whether to expose Abigail for what she really is, even though his name will be ruined. We see that he truly loves Elizabeth when he confesses lechery in order to protect his wife. The audience are drawn to John Proctor. He is one of few people in the play to be truthful throughout, along with Reverend John Hale. Elizabeth is also an honest person. She is a good Christian woman and acts the way she’s supposed to as a wife and mother. However, sometimes she can be very cold. She, along with many others, is accused of witchcraft simply because she fired Abigail when she suspected that her and John were attracted to one another and didn’t want it to go any further. Even though she has suspected John of lechery and is distant towards him, we know that she deeply loves him. Hale is called into Salem to find out what is going on. He seems a respectful man and gives everyone a chance to prove his or her innocence. He is sort of the plays saviour or hero.  We get to know Abigail Williams through her language and what other characters say. We see that she has power over the other girls and just how far she will go to protect herself, especially in Act 1: â€Å"†¦ I have seen some reddish work done at night and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!† Abigail leads the girls in accusing innocent people of witchcraft. Abigail saw the Indians murder her parents. This could have had an affect on the way Abigail is and how she acts. I think that she is able to threaten danger to the girls partly because of her childhood and what she has seen. In Act 3, Abigail shows her power by the way she speaks to Danforth in the courtroom. She even threatens him, saying that the Hell can take him: â€Å"Let you beware, Mr. Danforth †¦ Beware of it!† After realising what she has said, she immediately pretends she is in another trance and can see things. This is to allow her to get away with what she has said and so Danforth can’t reply to her. There is a great change from Act 1 to Act 3 with regards to hysteria. In Act 1, the girls accuse a few names and they tell just enough lies to protect themselves. Abigail and John Proctor take a gentle lighthearted approach to it in Act 1 and they laugh and joke about it. However, in Act 3 it becomes much more serious. They tell a massive amount of lies and act to make their story believable. Act 3 starts straight away with hysteria. The audience are aware of the gradual build-up because of the characters’ dialogue. As the play moves further along, the plot thickens as more names are thrown into it and even more unbelievable acting takes place with more and more lies being told. In Act 3, Mary Warren tries to go against the girls with the help of John Proctor in order to save Elizabeth and the other innocents. Mary Warren is already a weak and feeble character and when Danforth questions and speaks to her, he uses cruel vocabulary to fade her. It is obvious that he is on the girls’ side and doesn’t believe a word of what Mary Warren is saying. The girls then accuse Mary Warren of witchcraft. Then she sees that she cannot tell the real truth and overcome the girls’ lies so she decides to rejoin the girls. To protect herself she accuses John of making her go against the girls and tell ‘lies’ to them by threatening her. The stage directions in this act build up tension. They add to the drama and the way the girls convincingly act. The stage directions are just as important as the speech. They let us know what is going on and help us understand the characters more. The language also builds up tension. There is a lot of talk about God in the courtroom. Also, there is a lot of cutting each other off. Abigail always tends to cut off Danforth from speaking, so he can’t respond to her, this also shows her power. It is almost like Abigail is speaking and saying things just to stop anyone else from doing so.  Personally, I really like the play. I think it’s a great response from Arthur Miller. There is a mixture of characters and it’s interesting to see how they interact with one another. I like the play partly because it’s a true story and I was interested in finding out what happened.

Madness and Insanity in Shakespeares Hamlet Essay

In Shakespeares Hamlet, there are two characters that display qualities of insanity. They are Hamlet and Ophelia. Although they both appear to be mad at times, their downfall (or supposed downfall) is quite different. Ophelias crazed characteristics show up and intensify quite rapidly, until she is ultimately led to suicide. Her madness seems definite, and it is never questioned. The insanity or sanity of the main character is an arguable question. The issue can be discussed both ways, with significant support to either theory. Certainly, Hamlet has many reasons to lead him to becoming insane, because of the pressure and emotional strain that he is suffering from. This might be enough to cause the character to become†¦show more content†¦He proclaims, Though this be madness, yet there is method int (II.ii.200-201). Although it is clear that Hamlet originally intends to purposely put on an act of being crazy, it is still questionable whether or not he truly does become as such when his problems escalate further. It may be conjured that Hamlet is deranged because of the mention of continuous appearances of his fathers ghost. It could be argued that sane people do not see ghosts. However, in the beginning of Hamlet, there were three additional witnesses of the ghost. The three witnesses are Barnardo, Marcellus, and Horatio, all men who seem to be perfectly sane otherwise. Therefore, it does not seem logical that Hamlet be considered truly mad on the basis of the fact that he sees a ghost. One scene that appears to be particularly important in the argument of Hamlets madness is the first scene in the third act. Hamlet acts very strange after Ophelia attempts to return his gifts. Previously in I.iii., Hamlets love for Ophelia was displayed through Ophelias discussions with her father and brother. In the latter meeting of the two, Hamlet harshly rejects Ophelia. This move is most likely a hoax, considering his previous declarations of love and dedication, as well as the fact that he proclaims his infinite love for Ophelia when at her grave in V.i. Perhaps Hamlet suspects that someone isShow MoreRelated Madness and Insanity in Shakespeares Hamlet - Hamlet and Insanity1908 Words   |  8 PagesHamlet and Insanity  Ã‚        Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   William Shakespeare’s supreme tragic drama Hamlet does not answer fully for many in the audience the pivotal question concerning the sanity of Hamlet – whether it is totally feigned or not.
